Mariah Carey & Lauryn Hill Return To ‘Save The Day’ On New Anthem

Mariah Carey has tapped Lauryn Hill for her latest jam.

Last night marked the release of the chanteuse’s first official single, “Save the Day,” from her upcoming compilation album, The Rarities. On her newest offering, the legendary Mimi sings of hope, unity, and of bringing the world together again for the greater good. Though it is Hill’s stirring, uplifting coos from the Fugees’ 1996 cover cut of “Killing Me Softly With His Song” in the distance that make the track’s meaningful message even sweeter.

“We’re all in this together/ You’re my only hope/ And it’s too divided, too deep to understand/ But if we don’t do it, tell me, who will?” Carey sings as she urges in the chorus, “If he won’t, and she won’t, and they won’t, then we won’t/ We won’t ever learn to save the day.”

Co-produced with Jermaine Dupri, Carey’s “Save the Day” is a long time coming. As fans know, she previously teased the track back in 2011 on Twitter, though Hill’s featured appearance was not announced at the time. As MC revealed a year later, the song had been “in a holding pattern for a very special reason.. to be revealed at a later date.”

Speaking of the record today, Carey told Variety feels the song couldn’t have come at a more apt time: “I started writing this years ago and the message rings true now more than ever: ‘We’re all in this together.’”

As previously reported, the powerhouse’s eighth compilation LP includes previously-unheard material, demo versions, and unreleased tracks. Additionally, listeners will also receive 17 live performances from Carey’s ‘90s concert at the Tokyo Dome, during which she performed classic hits like “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” “Dreamlover,” “Vision of Love,” and more.
