K. Michelle Says Today’s R&B Music ‘Is Boring,’ Drops New Album

K. Michelle‘s new album “All Monsters Are Human” dropped on Friday, Jan. 31, a 13-track offering with features from Kash Doll and the City Girls.

Recently, the famed singer sat down with Atlanta Black Star where she talked about the new project and the current state of R&B music.

Michelle said that “All Monsters Are Human” not only documented her emotions when she was putting it together, it’s nothing short of high quality.

“The music is where I’m at right now,” she explained. “It’s how I’m feeling. It’s what I’ve gone through. It’s a K. Michelle album. It’s a really amazing, solid R&B album.”

The former “Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood” star then talked about today’s R&B music and said she isn’t too fond of it.

Because similar to what many have stated about some of modern-day hip-hop, Michelle said much of today’s R&B music lacks substance, and artists are only focused on creating solid singles, not full albums with a bunch of good songs.

The singer also said that a lot of the R&B music of today isn’t very interesting.

“It’s boring,” Michelle stated. “There’s some great songs. I don’t think people are caring about the bodies of work, and that’s what R&B is about, a body of work.”

It’s like a mood and you can remember that mood for years, that mood you was in when you put in that album,” she continued. “A lot of times you don’t get that anymore. You get a bunch of mumbling and long lullabies about nothing. Like, you get drug music.”

Michelle then named some of the artists that she’s currently into, like Ari Lennox, whom she called her “baby sister.”

“But there are some that should just go away,” she also said about other R&B acts.

Elsewhere in the discussion, the “Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart?” creator gave some advice to up-and-coming R&B singers, and she said the main thing they should do is work on their craft. Why? Because it’ll make all the difference in the long run.

There’s people who got way more followers than me that I make more money than,” she explained. “Because I’m just doing what I love to do, and I stay with a show or I stay with having to do something, and it’s not about an award that you paid for, ’cause that’s what it is, it’s paid for.”

“So it’s not about that,” Michelle added. “It’s about taking care of your family, and if you can sing and take care of your family, then to me you’re pretty successful.”
