Gabrielle Union To Executive Produce NBC Show ‘Black Girl Magic’

Being Mary Jane actress Gabrielle Union has been named executive producer of new NBC sitcom, Black Girl Magic.

Black Girl Magic is a half-hour single-camera comedy, from Downtown Girls’ co-creators Emebeit Beyene, Crystal Boyd and Chandra Russell (Southside), Gabrielle Union and showrunner Robia Rashid, per Deadline.

The show reportedly tells the story of three estranged sisters who learn a mysterious secret about their family history that changes their lives and brings them back to the magical world of New Orleans.

The Hollywood actress is also executive producing the dramedy Tips for Spectrum as well as starring in Spectrum’s Bad Boys T.V. spinoff, L.A.’s Finest.

Back in 2016, Gabrielle talked to Harper’s Bazaar about the parallels between being a Black actress in Hollywood and white actresses. When do you stand up and point out every micro-aggression, and when do you stand down so you’re not the angry black person all the time? It’s tiring. It feels like another job that you’re not getting paid for—that is all encompassing,” she told them.
